Abstinence means not having vaginal, anal or oral intercourse. As a method of birth control, abstinence means not having vaginal intercourse. To prevent pregnancy and protect against sexually transmitted diseases, ensure that the penis and semen (fluid from the penis) does not enter or get close to the opening of the vagina or rectum.

Abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy, and it provides the best protection against STD.

Sticking with your decision to abstain
  • Try to stay out of situations that will test your limits. For example, don't use alcohol and drugs when you are alone with your partner.
  • Talk to your partner about your physical limits you want at this time in your relationship. Make sure your partner knows how you feel before you get sexually involved. Be sure your partner is willing to respect the limits you decide that are best for you at this time.

Since entering into a sexual relationship can have a significant impact on you and your partner, it is important to take this step only when you are ready. You have the right to say "no" to sex. You should not feel guilty about a decision to abstain, and you do not have to explain your reasons for doing so.
