| Maternal and Infant Health Program (MIHP) |
The Maternal and Infant Health Program (MIHP) provides services to Medicaid eligible families with
pregnant women and/or babies through their first year of life. MIHP services are intended to improve
the health outcomes of pregnant women and infants by providing health education, emotional support,
nutrition education, childbirth and parenting education and help with transportation when needed. A
team that includes a public health nurse, social worker and registered dietitian make visits in the
home and/or office setting. Breastfeeding, improving healthy behaviors, coordination of care with
other providers, smoking cessation and referrals for all types of community services are highlights
of this program.
It has been our goal to improve mother and infant nutrition status, improve infant development, and
to promote family and infant bonding. In providing these services it is the hope that it will decrease
mother and infant death rates, decrease smoking, alcohol and drug use, and decrease the occurrence of
low birth weight infants. The dedicated CMDHD staff continues to work with these families to develop
family and individual goals, increase the possibility of delivering a healthy, full- term baby, while
providing families with parenting education to help ensure the baby stays healthy.
Objectives of the program include:
- Achieving the delivery of full term, healthy and beautiful babies
- Working with moms to help their babies stay healthy
- Encourage all regular medical care and immunization visits
- Linking families with our needed community services
