Children Special Health Care Services
The Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) program enrolls persons newborn to 21 years of age who have a qualifying medical diagnosis which is chronic, severe, and requires treatment by a medical specialist. Clients with cystic fibrosis or a blood clotting disorder are eligible to be enrolled for life. Over 2700 diagnoses are eligible for CSHCS coverage.
The goal of the CSHCS staff at CMDHD is to continue to provide outreach opportunities to the families and providers in the communities in which we live. There are no income limitations to this program, even though there may be a co-pay or payment plan for some with higher incomes. It is also a myth that families with private health insurance are not eligible. The parents of many children with CSHCS coverage have private health insurance. CSHCS provides additional help to those families. For more information please visit the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services CSHCS website or contact the Family Phone Line at 1-800-359-3722.
This is a state program with local offices available to each county in Michigan. Families are sent an application after their child is determined eligible through review of medical reports from a medical specialist. Assistance is available through the local health department for locating and paying for an evaluation by a medical specialist for the purpose of determining an eligible diagnosis.
Once enrolled CSHCS can provide:
-
Assistance for mileage and lodging when visiting out of town providers.
-
Assistance with adding new providers.
-
Assistance with the Children's Trust Fund which provides unique services for children with special needs that cannot be provided by other funds.
-
Care Coordination, Support groups, and Community-based services are also available.
-
Assistance in locating resources.
-
Supporting coordination of services.
-
Assistance in learning about the CSHCS condition and specialty providers like doctors, hospitals and clinics.
