On-Site Sewage and Well Mapping Project (2025 – Current)
Project Description
We are using Geographic Information System mapping, also called GIS, to create a digital map of septic systems and wells in our district. These maps show where systems are located and help us understand how septic systems may affect local water, including drinking water and lakes.
Our goal is to map all known wells and septic systems in the district.
Mapping includes drawing each system and recording basic details such as permit number, tank size, drain field type, and installation date.
So far, about 10 percent of records have been mapped. We estimate about 8,400 hours of work are still needed to finish the project.
Once the project is complete, we can share this information with community partners. This data will help each community decide how to best manage septic systems and wells. In the future, we plan to create a public map where homeowners, realtors, septic pumpers, and installers can easily find basic information about on-site systems. This will help services be more accurate and efficient for residents.
Priority Areas
Higgins Lake
CMDHD is working with Gerrish Township, Higgins Lake Foundation, Higgins Lake Property Owners Association, and Higgins Lake Friends for Clean Water to map sewage systems around Higgins Lake. Mapping in Gerrish Township is complete. Mapping in Lyon Township is expected to be finished in spring 2026, with funding support from project partners.
We are also supporting Gerrish Township as they develop an on-site well and sewage inspection ordinance by providing an inventory of existing records.
Isabella County
Staff are currently mapping sites as funding allows through September 30, 2026. Work on this project will continue as funding becomes available.
